Magnetic Wine Glass Charm – What Are They?

The magnetic charm is a type of magnet that are used to attach magnets to the inside of glasses or bottles. Magnetic wine glass charms have been around since the early 20th century when they were first invented. These magnetic charms are not just decorative but they can actually be very useful for keeping track of your drinks! You may remember from our previous post how you could use them to keep track of your favorite wines!

Magnetic wine glass charms come in different shapes and sizes. Some of these charms are made out of metal while others are plastic. There are even some charms with little magnets embedded into them so that they can hold other things like coins or lighters! The charm itself does not need to be very strong; it only needs to stick to the bottle or glass surface.

If there is no magnet attached, then the charm will simply fall off if dropped onto the floor or onto something else.

How Do They Work?

There are two types of magnetic charms: permanent and temporary. Permanent magnets cannot be removed once they have been placed on the bottle or glass surface. Temporary magnets do not last forever, however they can stay on longer than their permanent counterparts. The reason why the charms last longer is because they contain small pieces of iron which react with water molecules in order to create a kind of attraction between the charm and its surrounding area. This reaction is what makes the charm stick to the bottle or glass surface. The temporary magnets should last anywhere from a few months, all the way up to a few years! Although, this all depends on how the drinks are stored and handled.

What Alcohol Can Be Used?

The vast majority of magnetic wine glass charms are made to be used with normal drinking glasses. If you were to use a charm in a short-glass, then the glass might tip over! This is also true for plastic cups, as the weight of the magnet could cause the cup to fall over. With this in mind, it would be best to only use these charms with drinks served in wine glasses. If you are using a wine glass, then there is no problem. There is plenty of room to allow the charm to stick properly. You can also use these types of magnetic charms on pint glasses and other larger glasses that are usually used for beer.

The beverage that you put into your special glass or bottle does not matter. You can use anything from water, all the way to spirits. It does not even need to be a carbonated drink as long as the liquid stays in a liquid state. This means that you can use wine, beer, pop, juice and pretty much anything else under the sun.

There are a few types of drinks that you should avoid using magnetic charms with. Wine coolers and alcopops have a slightly different chemical composition to them, which means that they will not react well with the magnet. There is a possibility that the magnet could react with these drinks and either damage the surface of the glass or cause the drink to spill over. You should also avoid using these magnets with drinks that have fruit pulp in them as this can also cause the drink to spill over or even give it a strange taste meaning that you will not get the full enjoyment out of your favorite juice.

The magnets do not have any adverse effects on the drinks themselves but it is best to only use them with drinks in a glass or bottle. Certain metals, such as aluminium and tin, can be adversely affected by the magnet. It is always best to not push your luck!

Types of Charms

There are two main types of charms that you can get: glass and metal.

Metal Charms:

These types of charms last longer than the glass ones. They also look classier and more elegant when compared to their glass counterparts. These charms are usually made from stainless steel. The main issue with these types of charms is the price.

They are usually about three times more expensive than the glass ones.

Glass Charms:

The cheapest type of charm on the market, a vast majority of people tend to go for these due to their low price tag. The best thing about these types of charms is that they come in many different varieties and styles. You can get ones with inspirational words written on them, hearts or any other pattern you can think of.

The quality of these charms is usually not that great and most are prone to cracking or breaking. If you were to drop one on a hard surface such as tile or concrete then there is a possibility that it could shatter into many pieces. They are also much more prone to scratching than their metal counterparts. The upside is they are cheap and easy to replace when this happens.

Magnet Science

The strength of the magnet in the charm is measured in Gauss. A higher number means a stronger magnet. It is always best to go for a higher number, however it is important to make sure that the magnet will not react with the drink itself. Certain drinks such as beers contain a lot of iron which can have a negative reaction with the magnet if left in contact with it for too long.

Spirits and wines do not usually have this problem.

The Best Brands

There are not that many manufacturers on the market for these little gadgets but the ones that are available are of a good quality. It is best to avoid the very cheap options as they tend to be poorly made and fall apart quickly.

These are by far the most popular brand on the market and for a good reason, they offer great quality products at a good price.

Swarovski offers glass and metal charms with their signature ‘X’ pattern on them. They also have a wide range of designs, from hearts to words such as ‘love’ and ‘peace’. You can usually find these at many different gift shops or online.

These come in the form of a necklace and not a charm. They are not really common but they do have a cult following from a few aficionados. They are not too expensive and are usually cheaper than Swarovski. The downsides to these necklaces is that you can’t just add or remove a charm whenever you want and they are susceptible to breaking.

Do I need one?

A lot of people ask the question: ‘Do I need one of these?’

. It is an understandable question. As with anything, your choice to purchase one entirely depends on your situation and personal preferences.

As a general guideline, if you are someone who enjoys a tipple every now and again then they can prove to be very useful. For example, you go out a lot but you never remember to take your wallet with you. A charm on your keychain would solve this problem.

As we have seen from the science section, certain drinks do not react well with the magnets so if you tend to stick to one type of drink then it may be worth considering one of these.

You could also purchase one for the novelty factor! Everyone loves a gadget and they make great conversation pieces.

If you do not really drink too much then they may not be entirely necessary for you.

TIP: They are great stocking fillers for those last minute shoppers!
