Best Wheel Chocks: What are they?

Wheel chocks are devices used to prevent your vehicle from rolling away while being driven at speed. They come in different types like airbags, roll bars, etc. All these devices have their advantages and disadvantages and it’s up to you which one suits you better. There are many factors involved when choosing the right type of chock for your needs.

Types of Wheels:

There are two main types of wheels available today – steel and aluminum. Steel wheels tend to be heavier than those made out of aluminum or composite materials. Aluminum wheels weigh less than steel ones but offer lower performance due to their lack of strength. Steel wheels can easily break under high speeds so it’s recommended that you choose them only if you’re going to drive at higher speeds over long distances.


Steel wheels are generally stronger than aluminum ones. However, they’re not as light as those made out of composite materials such as carbon fiber. Steel wheels also don’t last forever and need regular maintenance. If you plan to use your vehicle for a long period of time then steel wheels might be the way to go.

Aluminum wheels are lighter than steel ones but aren’t quite as strong either since they do lose some strength with age. They’re also more prone to developing cracks with regular use.

Nowadays, carbon fiber wheels are becoming increasingly common among racing cars. They offer the best of both worlds since they’re extremely strong yet weigh significantly less than the other two types of wheels. However, they’re quite expensive and only high-end vehicles tend to have them due to their hefty price tag.

While it’s possible to use a single chock for all types of wheels, it’s never recommended since they’re not as effective when used this way. Using the right type of wheel chock for your type of wheels will ensure that it remains sturdy and secure while also providing a good level of safety.

Best Wheel Chocks: Why You Need Them?

While it’s true that wheel chocks are only meant to be a secondary measure of protection, not as strong as the brakes, they’re still an essential part of your vehicle’s safety features. If you’re going on a long drive then you should always remember to use wheel chocks. The reason is quite simple: You don’t want your vehicle to roll away and potentially get damaged or even hit somebody by accident.

Having chocks on hand also gives you a sense of safety since you won’t rely on the brakes to bring your vehicle to a complete halt in an emergency. If you’ve ever had a bad experience with your brakes failing you know how stressful driving can be without any sort of protection. With wheel chocks, you can drive without having to worry about your vehicle rolling away even if you have to make an emergency stop.


Some racing tracks require all vehicles to have wheel chocks in their trunk just in case they’re needed so this is something you might have to get used to. If you do end up going on a long drive then it’s a good precaution to take along some wheel chocks for additional protection.

One of the best things about wheel chocks is that most of them are relatively cheap and can be easily stored away when not in use. If you have a pickup truck or a sports utility vehicle then these can take up quite a bit of space which might not be practical. However, the alternatives such as foam blocks are even larger and heavier than traditional wheel chocks so most people prefer to carry these around.

If you’re only driving your vehicle on short trips around town then carrying them around isn’t exactly necessary so it all depends on how you plan to use your vehicle. If you have a garage or some sort of covered parking spot at your home then you won’t need to carry around wheel chocks either. Just make sure to keep your vehicle in gear and block the wheels in case it’s on an incline.

When getting wheel chocks for your vehicle, most people tend to get the standard size ones since they’re usually cheaper and can be used on a wide range of vehicles. If you have really large wheels or off-road wheels then getting larger chocks might be a better idea. The same thing can be said if you have really small wheels since the smaller chocks might not provide enough support.

It’s also a good idea to get chocks that have a tire grip attached to them so that you can easily place them under the tires and remove them again when needed. Most of the time these will be tethered to the chock so that you don’t lose them when placing them under the tires. It’s also a good idea to carry around a rag or a small piece of rope so that the chock doesn’t pop out if the tether should break.

When placing wheel chocks, make sure that they’re sturdy and won’t move or slip out from underneath the tire.
