Best Thunderbolt 2 Docks: What are they?
Thunderbolt 2 Dock (USB Type C)
The best way to use your laptop is to connect it via USB Type C cable. You don’t need any additional power supply or adaptor. However, if you want to charge your battery, then you may need a charger. Some of them have a USB port built into the device itself while others require external power source like wall plug or even solar panel.
There are two types of Thunderbolt 2 docks: those which provide power from the wall outlet and those which provide power from a USB Type C port. Both are available at different price ranges.
1. Belkin Thunderbolt Dock
Belkin’s Thunderbolt dock is one of the most popular ones out there. It comes with its own power brick, so you won’t need another one to charge your laptop. It supports both USB Type A and Type C ports. The dock costs $70, but you get free shipping and a 10% discount when you buy it through Amazon Prime.
2. Elgato Thunderbolt Dock
Elgato’s Thunderbolt dock is a little bit cheaper than Belkin’s offering, but still offers the same features such as charging your laptop via USB Type C cable. There is no power brick here, so you will have to provide power from an external source. The dock costs $80 and like Belkin’s offering, it is also available on Amazon.
3. Other Docks
If those two models don’t impress you, there are some other docks from reputable companies such as STARTECH and OWC that worth checking out. Each one of them is a little bit different in terms of design and price.
Thunderbolt 3 Dock (USB Type C)
A new generation of Thunderbolt docks has been introduced recently. These docks have USB 3.1 Type C ports and are compatible with the latest MacBook Pro as well as other laptops such as Dell XPS 13. They are also fully backward compatible with older Thunderbolt 2 devices. They cost even more than the previous generation of docks.
Here are some of them you should consider:
1. Belkin Thunderbolt 3 Dock
This is the most affordable dock from Belkin and it looks very similar to the company’s previous generation of docks. It comes with a 65W power adapter, so you won’t need another charger to power it up. The dock has 4 USB 3.0 ports and HDMI port for connecting an external monitor. You can also connect storage devices via the SD card slot or even an Ethernet cable if your laptop lacks those ports.
The dock costs $160 on Amazon.
2. OWC Thunderbolt 3 Dock
This is the most expensive dock you can buy, but it has more features than other models in the same price range. It comes with a 130W power adapter and supports charging a laptop as well as powering a display. It also has a USB 3.1 Type C port and three additional USB 3.0 ports as well as an Ethernet port.
The dock costs $219 on Amazon.
3. Other Docks
There are some other docks you can buy such as the Transcend Thunderbolt 3 dock, but their prices are even higher than the previous model we mentioned. If you still think that they are worth buying, then go ahead and purchase one.
Adapters (USB Type C)
If you already own a Thunderbolt 2 dock or plan on getting a new laptop that uses USB 3.1 Type C connector instead of Thunderbolt 3, then you will need an adapter to make them compatible with each other. Here are some of the best adapters you can buy:
1. Startech USB 3.
1 Type C Adapter
This is a pretty basic adapter that allows you to connect any device with a USB 3.1 Type C connector to a laptop or desktop with a Thunderbolt 2 or USB 3.0 port. It comes with a 6.5-foot cable, so you will have plenty of room to connect your devices.
The adapter costs $40 on Amazon.
2. Startech USB 3.
1 Type C to USB 3.0 Adapter
If you don’t need an adapter that has a built-in cable, then this one might interest you. It features the same design as the previous model and allows you to connect any device with a USB 3.1 port to a laptop or desktop with a USB 3.0 port. It costs $20 on Amazon.
3. Other Adapters
If the adapters we mentioned aren’t compatible with your devices, then you can check out other models on Amazon. In general, all Thunderbolt 3 adapters will be compatible with USB 3.1 Type C devices and vice versa. The main difference is the design and price tag of each adapter.
