The first thing you need to know is that there are different types of SAT test and each one has its own characteristics. You have to choose which type of test you want to take. There are two types of tests: verbal and quantitative.

Verbal tests assess your ability to think, reason, analyze, and communicate using language; they include questions such as “What color is the sky?,” “How old is Sally?” and “What time is it in New York City?

. Quantitative questions measure your knowledge of mathematical concepts, laws, and generalizations.

They include questions such as “How much is 15 percent of $200?”,” How many seconds are there in a year?,” and “What is the volume of a rectangular aquarium if one side is 3 feet longer than the other?

There will be questions based on short reading passages, longer reading passages, as well as on graphics such as tables and charts. You need to have a broad knowledge of many different subjects such as science, social studies, art, literature, current events and popular culture in order to do well on this section.

It is not always enough to simply do the math; sometimes you have to figure out which problem-solving approach to use.

On the essay you are tasked with writing an essay that supports an argument. You need to be able to express your thoughts in written form and support your position with relevant reasons. These essays are scored by humans who read them to determine what point of view you hold on the topic and how well you support that position.

Don’t talk during the test (unless you are struggling on a question and need to ask for help)

Don’t forget to raise your hand to go to the bathroom

How to Prepare for the Essay Section

You need to be able to write in complete sentences. You also need to be able to write about a given topic. The instructions for the essay will be displayed for you to read before you begin writing your essay. You will have 45 minutes to write the essay.

Make sure that you pick an essay topic that you have some knowledge about. It is your knowledge that will guide you in writing the essay. If you do not know much about the topic, you will have a difficult time coming up with things to write.

You should plan on writing at least a few paragraphs describing the topic. The more detailed your description is, the easier it will be for the grader to understand your position.

If there are people who can help you brainstorm and write your essay, take advantage of their assistance. Having others to bounce ideas off of is helpful.

Remember that this is not a class, it won’t hurt your grade and it won’t affect your final grade in any way, so feel free to ask for help.

How to Prepare for the Math Section

The math section is difficult for many test takers. It is okay to not like math and still do well on this portion of the test. The key to doing well on this portion is to prepare. You can take a class to help you learn the math that you will need for the test or you can use books from the library or evenbooks that you may have from high school.

You can also visit websites that give practice problems.

The key is to do a lot of practice problems. Try to do them all methodically and never skip a problem. Work with a stopwatch and set it for the 45 minutes you will have in the actual exam. How long you work on the problems is up to you, as long as you are working methodically and consistently.

You need to practice doing math quickly because that is what the test will require of you. There is no room for spending an hour on one problem. You need to know how to approach the problems and solve them the quickest way possible.

The greatest thing about the GRE is that it is predictable. Once you know the strategies for the question types and the patterns of the problems, you will be able to answer them quickly and easily every time.

You Need to Be Committed

You need to be committed to doing well on this test. If you are not committed to doing well, you probably won’t. You need to set goals and plans for what you want to accomplish. You need to also hold yourself accountable for your goals.

“Holding yourself accountable” does not mean finding someone to blame if you don’t do well. It means that you are self-disciplined and motivated enough to do what you know you should do, no matter what. If you fail to take the LSATs because you were lazy, that’s not accountability; it’s an excuse.

Holding yourself accountable means that you are organized and able to manage your time. It means that you are serious about your goals and do the work that is required to achieve them.

Last Minute Strategy

It is important to take practice tests. These are available on the internet or in book form at your library. You need to know what to expect on the test. You can also learn a lot about your score by taking these tests.

It is important to keep track of the questions you get right and wrong. You can then go back and review the material associated with the questions you missed. The more work you do now, the less you will have to do during the alloted review time on test day.

On test day, eat a good meal and get a full night’s rest (8 hours). Don’t try to cram the night before. Remember that you are not trying to memorize facts; you are training your mind to solve problems.

For the next week before the test, keep your mind active with some kind of mental exercise: crossword puzzles, games, reading, etc. Just make sure it’s something that keeps your mind working.

Finally, remember that this is just a game. You are qualified and prepared. You have nothing to lose and everything to gain. The pressure is not on you; it’s on everyone else.

They are the ones who need to score well. You just need to show up and know what to do.

How to Succeed on the GRE

Following the advice above will definitely improve your score, but there are additional steps you can take to maximize your performance. This part of the article is less essential than the material in the preceding sections, but it still contains some good information that may help you on test day.

The night before the test, do not sleep more than eight hours. Better yet, only sleep for six hours. That way, you will be tired and it will be harder to stay focused on the test. Once the test starts your mind will want to wander and you’ll have to fight to stay focused.

This is a great way to induce this feeling. Be sure you’re also tired on the day of the test so you get the full effect.

Drink plenty of water the day before and during the test. You want to make sure that you are taking the test at your peak mental efficiency. In addition, you will have to use the bathroom more and that will take up more time. Do not drink any beverages with caffeine, such as coffee or tea.

The small boost it provides is far outweighed by the increase in heart rate and blood pressure you experience, thus lowering your mental efficiency. Drink water, fruit juice (without pulp), or something else without caffeine.

The testing room will have an instructor in the front and several rows of desks with chairs. You are allowed to sit in any chair you want. Do not sit in the front row because the proctors will think you are there to answer questions for the class and that is distracting. Also, sitting in the front row makes it difficult for you to cheat.

Sit in the second or third row, but not all the way at the back and most certainly not all the way on the side. If you sit too far to the side, you may have another student sitting in your line of sight and you want to be able to see the diagrams projected on the board. Additionally, you will be able to leave class and get to the rest room without having to walk in front of everyone else.

During the breaks, do not speak to anyone and do not go to the bathroom. Go outside and sit by yourself until class starts again. If you speak to someone during the breaks, it will lower your concentration and you don’t want that to happen. Also, if you go to the bathroom, it takes time and you don’t want to waste any more time than you have to.

If you follow the advice above, you will be able to maximize your score on the GRE. Keep in mind, though, that the entire test is designed to make you freak out and feel stressed out. They want to see how you handle pressure. Actually, there isn’t that much pressure since they don’t do anything if you cheat.

Just don’t do it.

If you think you can handle it, then get ready for the test and good luck!
