The best way to watch movies or TV shows on your television is with a wireless display adapter (WDM). These adapters allow you to connect your HDTV directly into the console without using an external receiver.
You can then use it like any other device connected via HDMI cable. There are two types of these devices: those that plug into the back of the console and those that plug into the front of the console. They’re both available in different sizes, but they all have one thing in common: they need to be plugged into a power source before you can use them.
There are several reasons why you might want to use a wireless display adapter instead of an HDMI connection. For example, if you don’t have access to an HDMI port at home, you could still get around this problem by connecting your HDTV directly into the console.
Or perhaps you have a large living room where you’d rather not leave your TV unattended while watching something on the big screen. Wireless displays are also ideal for gaming consoles such as the Nintendo Switch because they let you play games from anywhere in the house without having to worry about losing your place in time or space.
If you do decide to go with an HDMI-based solution, there’s no reason why you couldn’t just use another HDMI cable between your TV and console. For most people, however, this solution is far from ideal.
For starters, HDMI cables are generally expensive and can be difficult to move around. In addition, it makes your entertainment center look messy if you have a lot of cables connected to your TV.
The first thing that you need to consider when choosing a wireless display adapter is which version of the technology you should get. There are currently two major versions on the market: Miracast and WiDi.
Both of these standards are similar in their core functionality, but there are some important differences between them that can make one more appealing than the other. Finally, there’s Apple’s version of this technology known as AirPlay. We don’t cover AirPlay in this guide since it’s locked behind the Apple ecosystem.
As we stated above, there are two major versions of wireless display technology on the market today: WiDi and Miracast. These are proprietary technologies that can only be used with the certified devices made by the same company.
Both of these standards have been on the market for quite some time now and most devices are available for both.
One of the biggest differences between these two technologies is the way in which they’re set up. WiDi devices, such as the Netgear Push2TV, need to be plugged in to an outlet before they can start working since they have to be wired directly into the source device.
To use WiDi, you simply connect all of your devices to the same Wi-Fi network and then use a smartphone to find and pair the two devices together. From there, you can start casting content directly from your phone or TV. This process can be a little bit tricky for people who aren’t well-versed in Wi-Fi networking since it requires the use of an app on your phone.
Since Miracast is a wireless industry standard, it is typically easier to get started since it doesn’t require any additional software on your device. You can simply enable the functionality on your device and start sending content to your TV.
There are some downsides to this technology, however. Since it’s an open standard, it’s prone to interference from other electronics in your house. In addition, not all devices can take advantage of Miracast. For example, the latest Apple TV does not support the protocol.
You’ll also need to consider how both of these standards perform when sending content. This really comes down to a matter of convenience versus quality.
WiDi does a better job at maintaining the quality of your original content, but only if your device is directly connected to mains power. If your TV or other device is using a wireless adapter to get online, the signal can start to degrade the quality of your stream.
Miracast is more convenient since you don’t have to worry about plugging anything in, but the connection can be a bit more temperamental. You may also notice a dip in picture quality.
This can be somewhat alleviated by using a device with a Gigabit Ethernet port, but it’s never going to be as good as a wired connection.
Ultimately, you’re going to have to try both technologies out for yourself to see which one you prefer. If neither of these options work for you, then you may want to look into buying a video converter to connect your TV to your computer.
