Mid-century modern design was popularized by designer Erwin Panofsky (1910–1998). His designs were inspired by the American industrial revolution and the post World War II world. These designs are characterized by their clean lines, geometric shapes, and simple materials such as wood or metal. They are often referred to as “modernism.”

The mid-century modern style is considered one of the most influential styles in architecture. It is known for its use of geometric forms, flat surfaces, and minimal ornamentation. Most mid-century modern furniture pieces have been designed with the intention of being functional rather than decorative. Their utilitarian nature makes them very durable and easy to maintain.

There are many different types of mid-century modern furniture available today. Some examples include:

Desk – A desk is a piece of furniture that sits at the center of your room and serves as a place to work. Desk pieces usually consist of two parts; a top part and bottom part. The top part typically includes drawers, shelves, or other storage areas while the bottom portion may contain lamps or other lighting fixtures.

Coffee Table – A coffee table is a long low table which is intended to be placed in front of a sofa. It typically has very short legs and its purpose is to elevate the surface of a room to a height that makes it comfortable to sit on a sofa while still being able to use the coffee table itself.

Entertainment Centers – An entertainment center is a piece of furniture that houses entertainment equipment such as a television, speakers, and video game consoles. Most entertainment centers consist of multiple storage spaces and open shelves. Some models also have cabinets where electrical equipment can be stored.

Tables – A table is a piece of furniture that has a flat surface that you can work on. There are many different types of tables such as coffee tables, dining tables, and side tables. The most common type of table is the dining table which sits in the middle of a room and has chairs surrounding it.

Chairs – A chair is a piece of furniture that you can sit on. Some chairs have arms, backs, and seats while others may not. Chairs are usually used for seating during meetings or while eating. They can also be used for sitting in comfort in your home or when reading a book.

Sofa – A sofa is a long seat that consists of two equal ends and two arm rests. They typically have around three to five feet long. Sofas are usually placed in living rooms or den. Sofas are designed for comfort so they can accommodate several people at once.

Sectional Sofa – A sectional sofa is a type of couch that is designed to have separate parts. Each part or section acts as its own sofa. They are typically used to accommodate a large amount of people. Most sectional sofas have pillows and cushioning to make them comfortable.

Contemporary furniture design draws its influences from the art movement of the same name. The major traits of this style are simple and geometric shapes, clarity, crispness, and a lack of ornamentation. The mid-century furniture period is defined from the years 1933-1972.

The Bauhaus design style was an architectural and design movement that had a huge impact in many aspects of modern life. It promoted the concept of functionalism in a lot of things.

Some of the most influential architects during this time were Le Corbusier, Walter Gropius, and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. Some of their most famous works are the La Tourette Monastery, the Berlin Postal Service Building, and the Crown Hall at the IIT.

The Bauhaus style sought to improve design for the modern world by stripping it down to its most essential elements.
