Best Men’s Foil Shavers: What are they?
A best men’s foil shaver is a type of razor which has two blades. They have been designed with the intention of making shaving easier and less painful for both man and blade. These razors are usually made from high quality materials such as stainless steel or titanium. Some manufacturers use plastic components, but these are rare nowadays due to their low cost.
The main advantage of using a double edge razor (DE) over a straight razor (BR), is that it allows you to shave at different angles without having to adjust your grip. For example, if you want to shave from the jawline down, you don’t need to hold the DE so tightly around your face and pull it back towards yourself; instead just move your hand slightly away from your face while still holding onto the handle. You’ll notice that the angle you’re able to achieve will vary depending on how far up your chin you want to go.
Another benefit of using a double edged razor is that it allows for greater control over the amount of stubble you grow. With a BR, when you reach the bottom of your cheekbones, there isn’t much room left for growth before reaching your jawline. With a DE, you can move the razor with more precision and can angle it so that only the hair growing in a certain area is shaved.
The only major cons of using a DE razor over a BR is that they don’t provide the closest shave and if not careful you can easily cut or even slit your skin open if you’re not experienced with them.
Best Men’s Foil Shavers: What to look for?
Probably the most important part of a best men’s foil shaver is the blades. The blades need to be strong enough to be able to cut through hair, but soft enough that they don’t cause unnecessary irritation. Most good razors will have a combination of both stainless steel and platinum coated blades, which will reduce the likelihood of your skin becoming sore or rash-like.
You’ll also want to look for a design that’s easy to hold in your hand. Foil shavers are generally well-designed in this regard, but you’ll find some offer a better grip than others.
There are also a number of different designs that use an oscillating or rotary motion to cut the hair as it goes past. These can provide a more comfortable shave by not tugging the hairs as much, but they’re very loud and can cause more problems for those with less experience. Look for one with at least 3 blades for a comfortable shave.
Finally, you’ll want to look for a shaver that’s easy to clean. Most models nowadays can be easily rinsed under running water and then dried using a towel. However, some of the older models with a lot of small components require an old toothbrush to be run through the blade areas to dislodge any trapped hair.
In any case, a clean shaver will almost always provide a better shave than a dirty one. Check out the cleaning instructions for your specific model before deciding whether or not to go with it.
Things to Avoid
There are a few things you’ll want to avoid when you’re purchasing a new men’s foil shaver. The first is an older model. Unless you really need to save money and have a coupon, I’d advise against buying anything that’s more than 3-4 years old.
The technology changes and improves so frequently that you’re really missing out by not having the latest and greatest features.
The other thing to look out for is buying from a sketchy vendor. Sadly, there are many sellers on Amazon that have mostly positive reviews yet they leave out some very important information about the condition of the item they’re selling. You’d be surprised at how many people leave out the fact that the item is used (and sometimes not in working order).
The key thing to remember here is that just because a seller has a 99% positive rating, it doesn’t mean they’re selling a genuine item. Always read the item description in full, and if there is any mention of it being used, obtain pictures of the item in the listing so you can assess its condition for yourself.
My Personal Recommendation
After going through all the suggestions I’ve given and doing some extra research on your own, you should have a pretty good idea about what type of shaver is best for you.
For instance, if you’re like me and need a close shave but don’t want to deal with the irritation that can sometimes come with it, then a Braun Series 7 probably is going to be your best bet.
However, if you’d prefer a more convenient way of removing your facial hair, then an electric shaver with a foil design would probably be the best option.
The choice is ultimately up to you, but here’s the one I personally would recommend:
Braun Series 9 9095CC Men’s Electric Foil Shaver
I chose this model for a few reasons. First of all, it’s a Series 9 so you know it’s going to be among the most advanced and provide you with the closest shave possible.
This particular model is also the most popular one available right now, and for good reason. It has enough power to comfortably cut through any hair, wet or dry (although I recommend using it with shaving cream for the ultimate experience).
The intelligent Sonic technology automatically increases power in the middle of the foils to ensure that every single hair is cut as short as possible.
It also has a specialized Turbo button that further increases the shaver’s speed for hairs that are particularly tough to remove (like stubble or any hairs that grow in different directions).
When you’re all done shaving, the Series 9’s Clean and Charge Station will automatically lubricate, clean, dry, and charge your shaver so all you have to do is just place it within the station. It’s as convenient as it is thorough.
This particular model also comes with a lot of useful accessories including a USB charging port so you can charge your shaver anywhere at any time.
From what I’ve read online, this shaver is pretty durable and should last you at least a decade (or more). It also has one of the best reputations compared to other models, especially when it comes to comfort.
My only complaint is the cost. This is definitely not the most affordable model on the market, but if you’re going to be using it daily for the next 10 years, it’s probably going to even out in the long run.
Whatever you decide to do, just make sure to learn as much as you can about each of your options before fully committing to anything.
