The Best Kick Shield Pad?
Kick shields are used by many MMA fighters including Ronda Rousey. Some of them have been criticized because they don’t provide enough protection against strikes or kicks. However, there are some other reasons why these pads may not be the best option for you. Let’s take a look at all of those reasons!
1. They’re Expensive
It might cost $500-$1000 to get one of these kick shields, which means you’ll need to spend money on your training regimen. You will need to buy different types of equipment such as pads, straps, etc. You could also invest in a good pair of boxing gloves if you want better protection from punches. If you decide to go with a kick shield, it would be wise to purchase several sets so that you can practice kicking various targets.
2. They Don’t Work Well Against Strikes From Other Weapons
If you choose a kick shield, then it must protect your body from strikes from weapons like fists, elbows, knees and even head butts. It provides no protection against such attacks. For this reason, you may want to consider other equipment such as a heavy bag, a focus mitt, or some Thai pads.
3. They’re Not As Portable As You May Think
A lot of people think that they can just pick up their kick shield and take it with them to training. The truth is that these shields are rather large and bulky and aren’t easy to transport from place to place.

If you need equipment that will help you improve your grappling game, a heavy bag is a much better option for you. With handwraps and some good MMA gloves, you’ll be able to practice striking while still protecting your hands.
On the other hand, if you need equipment to help you improve your stand-up game, then a focus mitt or a heavy bag are both better options for you. With the right pair of MMA gloves, you’ll be able to practice your punches and kicks without worrying about hurting your hands.
6. They’re Not Good For Sparring
While kick shields are useful when it comes to practicing footwork and developing aim, they do not allow you to practice proper striking combinations. This means that you won’t be able to practice your head movement or develop your evasive maneuvers.
7. They Don’t Offer You The Best Training Environment
When you’re using a kick shield, you’re stuck in one spot the entire time. You’re also limited to the types of strikes that you can throw. As a result, you are not able to practice movement, evasion or any other techniques for that matter. It’s just not the best way to improve your skills as a martial artist.
What You Should Do Instead
If you’re looking for equipment that will help you out with your training, then there are plenty of alternatives that are better than kick shields.
We recommend that you pick up a heavy bag and some MMA gloves. With the right equipment, you’ll be able to practice just about everything you need without worrying about hurting your hands.
In addition to a good training bag and gloves, there are other types of protective gear that you can wear to protect your head and face. For example, there are several different types of headgear that you can use when working the heavy bag or even when throwing kicks and punches at your opponent.

Whatever you do, just make sure to stay away from kick shields. They’re not the best type of equipment and they certainly won’t help you reach your goals. Grappling dummies are slightly better because they offer more freedom of movement, but there are still better options that will allow you to train more effectively.
