Huawei P20 Pro Review:

The Huawei P20 Pro is one of the most anticipated smartphones from Huawei. It was announced at MWC 2017 and it will be available later this year. The device features a 5 inch HD display with 1920 x 1080 pixels resolution, 2GB RAM, 64GB internal storage (expandable up to 256 GB), 13MP rear camera with LED flash and f/1.7 aperture, 4MP front facing camera, Android 7.0 Nougat OS, 3,000mAh battery and IP68 water resistant rating.

In terms of design, the Huawei P20 Pro looks like a large version of the Huawei Mate 10 Pro. It comes in two variants – one with 32GB storage and another with 128GB storage. Both are powered by Snapdragon 835 SoC which is clocked at 2.45GHz coupled with Adreno 540 GPU and 4GB RAM.

There’s no word yet if there’ll be a dual SIM variant or not but we expect it since this is an expensive smartphone after all!

Display

The display of the device is a 5.8 inch OLED display with 1,080 x 2,244 pixels resolution, 16M colors and 18:7:9 aspect ratio. While this isn’t as high on numbers as other flagships, the display quality is pretty good. It also has support for HDR10 standard for better video streaming experience.

Camera

One of the key features of the Huawei P20 Pro is its camera setup. It comes with a whopping three rear cameras. The main camera is equipped with a 40 MP RGB sensor, f/1.8 aperture, OIS and 3x optical zoom.

The secondary camera is a 20 MP monochrome sensor with f/1.6 aperture, OIS, 2x optical zoom and black and white photos. The third one is an 8 MP sensor with f/2.4 aperture, 3x optical zoom and a telephoto lens for better zoomed in shots. The selfie camera is a 24 MP unit with f/2.0 aperture, screen flash and 3D portrait lighting modes.

The cameras on the P20 Pro sound impressive on paper, however we’ll have to wait and see how they perform in real life scenarios.

Battery and Storage

The Huawei P20 Pro is equipped with a non-removable Li-Po 4000 mAh battery. Like other flagships, it supports fast charging and also comes with support for wireless charging. The storage on the P20 Pro can be expanded up to 256 GB with a microSD card but there’s no official word if Huawei will bring a more affordable version without the microSD slot like the P10.

Software

The Huawei P20 Pro will be the first device to ship with Android 8.1 Oreo out of the box with their own custom EMUI 8.1 on top. The software experience should be very similar to the Mate 10 series but we will have to wait and see how it feels in actual usage.

Huawei P30 Pro Price

The price for the base model of the Huawei P30 Pro without any carrier subsidies is around $900.

Best Huawei Phones Under £200 in 2018

The recently announce P20 series by Huawei has received a lot of flak for not having a high-end camera and just opting for a cheaper, low-end model. But the good thing is that all the phones announced, are actually very interesting and do bring something new to the table. They might not be as powerful as Galaxy S9 or an iPhone X but are certainly worth getting.

The Huawei P20 Lite was probably the least talked about phone in the series but that doesn’t mean it isn’t a good phone. It might be the mid-range offering of the series but it still brings something new to the table. The P20 lite has a notched display, just like other 2019 flagships, and comes with a glass back design. It is also the most affordable phone in the series and we’re sure a lot of people are going to like that.

So if you want a great mid-range experience that is budget friendly as well, then the P20 lite might just be the phone for you.

Specs

Pricing & Availability

The Huawei P20 Lite is available for around £350/$400.

Display & Design

The display on the P20 lite comes in at 5.84 inches with a 2280 x 1080 px resolution. With these specs, you’ll get pretty crisp images and a decent level of detail. It has an 18.7:9 aspect ratio and has very thin bezels.

The P20 lite has an Aluminum frame and a glass back which has become somewhat of a staple for most mid-range and premium phones nowadays.

The phone is also equipped with a notched display like the majority of 2019 flagships. This allows Huawei to have the earpiece, selfie camera, and other sensors in a tiny area at the top of the phone.

Hardware

The P20 lite is powered by the HiSilicon Kirin 659 which is paired with either 3GB or 4GB of RAM and 32GB of storage. The CPU isn’t the most powerful and you might find it struggling when multi-tasking. Still, it does a decent job and can handle simple games like PubG Mobile on low settings and basic editing of images.

Camera

The P20 lite comes with a Dual 20MP (f/1.8) + 2MP rear camera and a single 24MP (f/2.0) front-facing camera. The cameras on the P20 lite are impressive for the price range, that is if you don’t mind the AI-enhancements that Huawei likes to apply to their photos.

A lot of the times the AI will make your photos brighter and more vibrant, which isn’t a bad thing but if you preferred the original image, you’ll have to edit it afterwards.

It also comes with all the software features that are common on most Huawei devices such as the ability to draw on your photo and it automatically recognizing text, something that a lot of people actually find quite useful.

Battery Life & Storage

The Huawei P20 lite comes with a 3,000mAh battery and due to the lower resolution and power-saving measures of its processor it can easily last you a day or more depending on your usage. It also has storage expandability up to 256GB via a micro-sd card slot.

Overall

The Huawei P20 lite is a good phone for what you pay. It has a very stylish design, great cameras, long battery life, and is relatively affordable.

Moto G7 Power

The Moto G line has always been known to be some of the best affordable phones you can buy and that hasn’t changed with the newest addition. Now on its 3rd generation, the Moto G7 Power has become even more affordable and still packs quite a punch. It doesn’t look like much on the outside but this phone has everything you’d want in an affordable smartphone.

The Moto G7 Power has a 6-inch display, which is great for media consumption and gaming. You’re also getting a notch which some people love and others can’t stand. Thankfully, Motorola allows you to black out the notch in the settings so you’ll never have to see it if you don’t want to.

Inside, the Moto G7 Power is running on the Snapdragon 632 processor with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of storage. There is also a large battery keeping this phone alive. With a massive 5000mAh battery, the Moto G7 Power easily lasts 2 days on a single charge and that’s with heavy usage. On the rear, you’re getting a powerful 16MP camera while up front you’re getting a 8MP camera for taking great selfies and video chatting. The software is pretty simple to use and the pictures come out great.

Android 9.0 with the May 2019 security patch is pre-installed, which is always great to see on a phone that doesn’t cost an arm and a leg.

Moto E5 Plus

The Moto E series has been a long-standing line of great, affordable phones from Motorola. The company recently added two new models to the Moto E5 series with the Moto E5 Play and the Moto E5 Plus. The Plus model is obviously the higher-end of the two and it has some pretty neat features you don’t usually see in this price range.

The Moto E5 Plus has a 6-inch, 2280 x 1080 px display with an iPhone X-style notch up at the top. The bezels are pretty small on the sides but there’s still a noticeable chin at the bottom. This isn’t the best display on the market but it gets the job done. It even has a notification LED!

Powering the phone is the Snapdragon 435 processor with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of storage. There is a microSD card slot for expandable storage. Motorola has included their popular “Display” feature which automatically adjusts the brightness of the screen depending on your surroundings. The Moto E5 Plus comes with the standard rear-mounted fingerprint sensor and a 12MP and 5MP dual camera system with the 5MP front-facing camera.

The battery is massive in this thing. The Moto E5 Plus comes with a 5000mAh battery that should last well over 2 days of usage. Motorola has always been good about including a standard USB port on their phones to allow for fast charging and the Moto E5 Plus is no exception. With the included TurboCharger, you can get 8 hours of use with just a 15 minute charge.

Motorola is continuing to release great budget phones and they’re honestly really hard to beat. Each phone in the E series is better than the one before it and that trend continues with the Moto E5 Plus.
