What is a Propane Gas Grill?
These types of grills are ones that use propane as a source of energy in order to create heat. The propane is put into a tank and from there it goes through a tube where it’s either lit on fire or a small electric current is run through it in order to create the heat. The main advantage to propane grills is, obviously, that they are portable. Contrary to popular belief, you don’t need a fancy grill to cook great food. In fact many of the best tasting foods are cooked on a grill that doesn’t even have an electric starter! You just need to know how to start one and have a few basics tools.
The types of grills are almost as varied as the foods they cook and different types of grills offer different benefits so you need to decide what your main concerns are before buying a grill.
Types of Grills
Barbecue Grills: Also known as “backyard” grills, these are the most popular and widely used grills on the market. They sit on four legs and have a hinged grate that can be raised or lowered over a series of burners aligned parallel to the cooking surface. The burners can be fueled by either liquid propane or bottled gas and are usually controlled by a control knob. These grills are easy to start and control, but they have very limited cooking space so large amounts of food need to be cooked in batches.
Stand-Up Grill: Also known as a “cart” grill, these grills have three or four short legs and a grill surface that can be raised to cooking height or brought down to a level below the legs for transport. These grills are popular with people who make their living cooking outside, such as taco vendors. These grills can be very heavy, so make sure you can lift it if you need to move it!
Grill Pits: Also called “ditch” or “hog” roasters, these are very large metal holes that are set into the ground and covered with metal panels. The top panel has a large crank that is used to lift and lower the grill surface over the fire. These grills are rarely used anymore because they take a large amount of time and manpower to set up and take down and are very difficult to transport. They are mostly used at large outdoor events with a lot of preparation time.
Offset Smokers: Also known as “stick” burners, these grills have a large wood or charcoal fire burning in a firebox on one side of the grill and a cooking surface on the other. The smoke and heat from the fire are channeled across the cooking surface and out through vents in the back of the grill. These grills are good for long, slow smoking or low and slow barbecuing.
No matter what type of grill you buy, you need to consider where you will be placing it. Most people place their grill on the patio or deck, but this can be problematic in wet weather or winter. A better idea is to place it somewhere it can’t be damaged by moisture or winter weather.
If you are going to place the grill on the lawn or driveway, an awning or canopy will provide protection from the rain. You can also buy portable grills that sit in a stand and have their own covers.
If you are placing your grill near the house or shed, make sure there is plenty of space around it for people to move and that it won’t get covered in snow when winter comes.
Gas or Charcoal: Which is Best?
This is a matter of personal preference, but here are some factors you should consider before making your decision:
Propane is easy to start and control as long as you have access to a propane tank (or several). You need to bring your own tank(s) and refill them as needed, but it rarely causes issues. The smell and taste of the propane is usually undetectable in the food when it is burned correctly.
Charcoal produces a better flavor on the food and is probably easier on the stomach for people with sensitive systems. It is also an excellent choice if you are planning to cook over a very high temperature or for multiple hours (think 24-hour ribs). Charcoal imparts a slightly smoky flavor to the food. It is easy to start and control, but you will need to buy bag after bag of charcoal as needed.
You should probably experiment with both types of grills before you make a decision. If you buy a propane grill, you can easily convert it for use with natural propane or even Weber’s own line of liquid propane tanks (not included).
