Best GRE Books: What are they?

GRE (General Intelligence Test) is a standardized test administered by the New York State Department of Education to high school seniors every two years. It measures cognitive ability such as verbal, numerical, spatial, and logical skills. The GRE exam consists of three sections which are taken one after another at different times during the year. Each section includes multiple choice questions with answers ranging from 0 to 60 points. Scores range from 200 to 800 points.

The GRE is considered the gold standard for admissions purposes. If you score above 700 on the GRE, then your chances of getting into a top university are much higher than if you scored lower.

The average score on the GRE is around 600, but it’s possible to get scores as low as 500 or even below!

If you want to take advantage of all these advantages, then there are several good choices when choosing a GRE Prep Book. Here are some of them:

Who is this book for?

This book is for people who want a better score on the GRE. It’s written for people who have already prepared for the GRE and are familiar with the content. If you’re unsure about anything, you should ask your teacher or look it up in the Official Guide before moving on. While this book won’t turn you into an expert over-night, it will give you all the information you need to do well on test day.

How is this book organized?

This book is split into six parts: Math, Verbal, Foundations, Practice, Answers and Splits. We’ll explain each so you know exactly what you’re getting into!

The GRE test has two math sections, each with its own set of topics and different question styles. This part of the book contains:

· A review of all the math that you’ll need to know for the GRE. This includes a chapter dedicated to the topics tested, like numbers and operations, equations and inequalities, geometry and more.

· Guides to each of the different question types: multiple choice, numeric entry, quantitative comparison and experimental. For the math topic chapters, there’s an introduction to each topic and sample questions with and without explanations.

The verbal section of the GRE contains three types of questions: reading comprehension, sentence equivalence and text completion. This part of the book contains:

· A review of all the verbal concepts you’ll need to succeed on the GRE, like identifying sentence parts, understanding word choices and figuring out text meaning.

· Guides to each of the three different question types: multiple choice, identify the error and fill in the blank. For the verbal topic chapters, there’s an introduction to each topic and sample questions with and without explanations.

The GRE has a Foundations section at the beginning, which contains two essays on different topics. This part of the book reviews foundational aspects of the test that you’ll want to review before taking the test.

After all that theory, you’re ready for some practice! This book includes two practice GREs.

Each comes with a test introduction explaining that test’s format, which you should read before starting the test.

The book’s second edition includes an additional two tests, bringing the total number to four. These tests are scored separately from the first two, but your score report will only show you a combined score.

Answers and splits

Once you’re finished, you can check your answers for each test. For math questions, we include example solutions with nearly every question.

For the first two tests, we also provide an answer key so you can see how you did. The answer key also provides a percent correct for each question, which should help you analyze your strengths and weaknesses.

The answer key is split into two sections: math and verbal. You’ll find that we don’t include the essays in the answer key since we encourage you to write your own.

About the tests

Test 1 and 2 are based on the first edition of this book, so some of the question types won’t be familiar to you. That’s okay!

We provide sample responses for the extra time questions and x/y charts for the data representation questions, which will still allow you to practice the GRE’s unique question types.

Best GRE Books - from our website

Test 1

The first GRE in this book was published by ETS in 2013. It contains the following sections: one experimental, one analytical writing, two verbal and one math.

Test 2

The second GRE in this book was published in October of 2015. It contains the following sections: one experimental, one analytical writing, three verbal and one math.

Test 3

The third test is another of ETS’s practice tests. It has one experimental, one writing, two math and three verbal sections.

The test has a new, experimental section: the “exceeding skills” section. This section is in addition to the verbal and math sections and will provide you with an additional opportunity to practice questions.

The second, writing section won’t count against your score, but it will allow you to practice the GRE’s writing interface. You won’t be able to see your score for this section, but you will have an opportunity to edit and revise your essay before sending it to ETS if you choose.

We’ve seeded some of the verbal and math sections with experimental questions that will not be graded. These questions will look and feel just like the other questions in their sections.

The answers, of course, to all of the questions are provided at the back of the book.

Good luck!
