What Is A Roof Top Air Conditioner?

A roof top air conditioner (RTA) is a device which uses the heat from your home’s radiators or fans to cool down your home. They are usually mounted on the outside of your house and allow you to enjoy warm weather without having to open up windows. RTA’s come in two types: wall mount units and ceiling mounts. Wall mount units are typically used indoors while ceiling mounts are generally used outdoors.

The advantage of using an outdoor unit over one installed inside your home is that it allows for better ventilation since there is no need to install ductwork and pipes under your house. You will have less maintenance issues with an outdoor unit because they do not require regular cleaning or replacement like indoor ones do.

The disadvantage of using an outdoor unit is that they tend to produce more noise than indoor units. If you live in a noisy neighborhood, then an outdoor unit may not be the best choice for you.

How Does An Outdoor Unit Work?

An outdoor unit works by circulating hot air through a series of coils located around your home. These coils create a path for the hot air to travel along before being vented out into the outside environment. The cooled air is then circulated back into your home.

The air that is blown into your home is not actually refrigerated (it is simply cooled through evaporation). The refrigerant inside the outdoor unit uses a system of fans to blow air across it. This causes the liquid in the coil to evaporate which in turn cools down the surrounding air. The cooled air is then pushed under your house and released outside.

What Is A Whole House Air Conditioner?

A whole house air conditioner (WHAC) is a larger version of an RTA. Unlike an RTA, which is designed to cool a single room or small set of rooms, a WHAC is used to cool the entire interior of your house. They can be quite large and heavy and are usually installed in your basement or crawlspace.

The advantage of using a WHAC is that you can cool the whole house at once, meaning you don’t have to deal with as many temperature variations. You also won’t have to open windows or doors in order to cool down certain rooms (which defeats the point of installing one in the first place).

The disadvantage of using a WHAC is that they require a lot of upkeep and maintenance. They can also very costly to purchase and install.

For these reasons, many people choose to use a combination of both an RTA and a WHAC. They provide the best of both worlds. You can use the RTA to cool down individual rooms when necessary and use the WHAC to cool the rest of the house.

What Is A Ductless Mini-Split?

A ductless mini-split is very similar to a conventional HVAC system. It uses refrigerant to cool and heat your home. The main difference is that it doesn’t use ductwork. Instead, the refrigerant is sent through a copper pipe to an outside unit which contains an expansion valve. This allows the refrigerant to change states from a liquid to a gas and back again in a continuous loop.

The refrigerant comes in direct contact with the outside air. The temperature of the outside air helps determine how well the system can cool or heat your house. This type of system can only cool a portion of your home and not the entire thing. It is typically used in areas that experience large temperature swings (such as Arizona).

What Is An Attic Fan?

An attic fan absorbs the hot air that accumulates in your attic and blows it outside. The fan is installed in your attic and has a small vent that sticks out through your roof. As the fan operates, it sucks the hot air out of your attic and exhausts it outside.

An attic fan can help reduce your energy bill by helping your home stay cooler. If you live in a hotter climate, they can also prevent your air conditioner from working too hard.

What Is A Standalone System?

A standalone air conditioner is a very basic unit that can be installed in your home’s crawlspace or basement. It is similar to the units that you find in stores and malls except they are much smaller. These systems do not have a heating component so you will still need a conventional heating system if you live in a climate that gets cold in the winter.

Do I Need A Permit To Install Central Air Conditioning?

Installing a central air conditioning system is no easy task so you will most likely want to hire a professional for the job. Before they start the installation process, they most likely will require that you obtain a permit for the job.

Your local building department will be able to tell you if a permit is necessary in your area. They can also tell you what steps you will need to take in order to get the permit. Depending on where you live, the permit process could be very simple or very difficult.

How Much Does Central Air Conditioning Cost?

Installing central air conditioning will cost you anywhere from $5,000 to $20,000 or more. The most expensive price tag ($20,000) is for a system that cools the entire house. The cheaper price tag ($5,000) is for a system that only cools one room.

The price you pay will depend on a variety of factors. The size of your home is probably the biggest factor. Other things that affect the price are the types of doors and windows in your house, the types of walls, if you have a basement, if you need an evaporative cooler, if you need ductwork, and other factors.

One thing is certain: installing central air conditioning is not cheap. If you are on a tight budget, there are a few things you can do to lower your costs. First of all, if you are comfortable with doing some of the work yourself, you can shop around for the best prices on equipment and install it yourself. This can cut your costs by as much as 40 percent.

Another thing you can do is buy a slightly smaller system than you need. For example, if you get a 3-ton unit instead of a 5-ton unit, you can save around 35 percent on your bill. If you are only cooling one room instead of your whole house, you can again buy a smaller system and save around 25 percent.

Of course, if you are going to skimp on the size of the system or skimp on the size of your home’s square footage, it is best to discuss this with a professional first. An improperly sized system can lead to much higher bills in the future. The only way to be sure a system is properly sized is to do a load calculation. Many manufacturers offer these calculations for free and can even help you with rebate forms and other paperwork.

Even after taking these steps, your bill will still be pretty high. For most homeowners, it is cheaper to just continue using your current cooling system.

How Do I Get A Rebate For My Central Air Conditioning Unit?

Many manufacturers offer rebates to customers who buy their products. In some cases, these rebates can be very generous. The trick is finding out about them. Manufacturers are not required to publicize their rebate programs so most of the time you have to hunt for them. Here are some tips on how to find and take advantage of manufacturer’s rebate programs:

1. Look On The Manufacturer’s Website – The best place to look for a manufacturer’s rebate program is on their own website.

Go to the company’s website and look for a link that says “rebates” or “promotions.” If you can’t find it on the homepage, look for it on the rest of the website or do an Internet search with the name of the company and the word “rebates.”

2. Get In Contact With The Manufacturer – If you can’t find any information about manufacturer rebates on the website, look up the name of the company along with the word “rebates” or “promotions” in an Internet search.

Some manufacturers choose to advertise their rebate programs on their website, but not all of them do. If you look up the manufacturer and rebate information on Google or another search engine, try sorting the results by date so you can find any more recent rebate announcements that may not be listed on the company’s website.

3. See If A Local Retailer Offers The Manufacturer’s Rebates – Many larger retail stores work with manufacturers to offer rebates on their products.

Some retailers offer these rebates as a way of attracting customers into their store. Even if you plan on purchasing the product online, it may be cheaper to buy it at a local store just so you can get the rebate.

4. Ask If The Retailer Accepts Manufacturer’s Rebates For Online Orders – Some retailers will accept manufacturer’s rebates for online purchases.

While this doesn’t happen all of the time, it is worth asking if you buy the air conditioner online.

As you can see, there are quite a few steps involved in getting a manufacturer’s rebate on your new central air conditioning unit. Manufacturers don’t make this a simple process and that is why many people just choose to pay the higher price rather than go through the hassle of getting the rebate. If you really want that money back, it is up to you to do the research to find out what steps you need to take.

There’s No Way I Can Afford A New Air Conditioner!

If you’re like most people, you don’t have thousands of dollars just laying around to spend on an air conditioner. In fact, the reason why you are looking into a central air system is because you can’t afford an upgrade to your house to add proper cooling. While it may be true that you can’t afford a brand new system, there are some alternatives that may work for you.

1. The cheapest way to cool your home is with a window unit.

Depending on the size of your house, you can get by with one or two of these units. The problem with this method is that you have to spend hours every day manually pushing the window unit in and out and remembering to shut the door when you’re done. It’s a hassle to say the least.

2. The next step up from a window unit is a mini split.

These operate off of a small internal unit which blows the cool air into the room. These can be installed in a window like a traditional unit, or can be ducted into the wall and hidden out of sight. These can cool one or two rooms and are fairly inexpensive to operate.

3. The last type of system that you can consider is a portable air conditioner.

These work similar to the mini split systems, but these are designed to be portable so you can move them from room to room as needed. These units are significantly more expensive to buy and operate, so you’ll want to make sure you consider all of your options before settling on this type of system.

It’s important to keep in mind that these are all temporary solutions. While these can all cool your home (or at least the rooms you choose) they don’t do anything to repair the leaks in the house which is what is causing the problem in the first place.
