What is Duplicolor Engine Enamel?
Duplicolor engine enamel is a type of acrylic or polyester resin used to create engine parts. It was developed in the early 1970’s by DuPont and it became popular after its introduction into automotive products. Dupont was acquired by Dow Chemical in 1995, which then sold the company to General Motors in 2000. GM discontinued use of dupont’s product back in 2005, but it still exists today as a specialty product.
Why Duplicolor Engine Paint?
The main reason why dupont’s engine paints are so popular is because they offer many benefits over traditional lacquer based engine paints. They last longer, have better resistance to wear and corrosion, and are easier to apply than lacquers. Dupont enamels also provide superior protection against oxidation, cracking and fading. These advantages make them ideal for motorcycles.
How Does Duplicolor Engine Paint Work?
Duplicolor engine paint works by creating a protective coating on the surface of your engine. This coating prevents dirt, grease and other contaminants from entering the engine and damaging it. It also protects the finish of your motor from damage caused by exposure to sunlight, salt spray, corrosive liquids like gasoline or diesel fuel, extreme temperatures (such as those found while riding at high speeds) and even UV rays.
What are the Different Types of Dupont Enamels?
Duplicolor produces five main types of engine paints:
Acrylic Enamel offers protection against moisture and water, as well as good resistance to most chemicals. It provides average resistance to oils and fuel and is less durable than other types of enamel.
This type is best for equipment or parts that see a little bit of wear and tear.
Polyester Enamel is a good all around paint, with good resistance to moisture, water, fuel and most chemicals. It has better wear characteristics than acrylic enamel and stands up well to exposure to the elements.
Alkyd Enamel can withstand the most abuse of any of the five types, but is not as resistant to moisture as other types. It offers very good resistance to heat and chemicals.
This type comes in gloss, semi-gloss and flat varieties.
Tricoat Enamel is a combination of alkyd and polyester enamel, and offers the best of both worlds. It has the superior protection of alkyd with the flexibility of polyester.
It is very resistant to heat, chemicals and other outside forces.
Silicate Enamel offers an extra measure of protection against moisture and water damage, making it ideal for marine use. It is not as flexible as other types and cannot be applied in extreme temperatures.
What are the Advantages of Using Duplicolor Engine Enamel?
Duplicolor engine paints have several advantages over other types of engine paints. Chief among these is that it lasts a very long time, costing you less money in the long run. Since it lasts so long, you won’t have to reapply it as often as you would other types. They also protect your engine from all outside elements.
