You’ll want to have at least three per side of your boat for the best support. Normal bolts are too small and will more than likely bend if you use them.
If you don’t have carriage bolts, you can use large diameter screws instead. Just make sure they are long enough and thick enough to support the weight of your boat.
Drill bit: You’ll need a drill bit that is the same diameter as the carriage bolts you’re using. Normally you just need a simple $10 drill bit from your local hardware store.
Spray Paint: You’ll need a can or two of spray paint to color your brackets and bolts so they match your boat. Some people use old cans of spray paint that are leftover from other projects.
Other Equipment: Depending on where you’re going to put your boat on the trailer, you may need other materials. For example, if you want to make a cradle for your boat, you’ll need lumber for that. If you want to bolt down your boat, you’ll need bolts, washers, lock washers and nuts.
How To Build Your Boat Trailer (For A Small Sailboat)
There are lots of ways you can go about building a boat trailer and I’m only going to show you one way. The idea is to get your boat on the road as quickly and easily as possible. If you’re building a trailer for a large sailboat, this may not apply to you.
In my case I was building a small trailer for a Laser sailboat. I wanted something very light and something I could pull with my car. The materials for this project cost me about $75, but if I didn’t have scrap wood lying around, it would have cost me over $100.
The main thing is making sure you use common sense anytime you’re working with wood and using tools. Always wear your safety gear (goggles, etc.) and take your time. Think ahead before you make a cut and look at the big picture.
The first thing I did was assemble my materials. I had some scrap 1×3’s, 2×4’s and plywood so that’s what I used. You can use whatever you have around the house or buy new wood if you want. It’s your choice.
The wood I had measured 3/4″ x 2″ x 8′ and made the sides of the trailer. These were assembled using 3″ screws. The 2×4’s were cut to size and used as cross pieces for bracing.
Tip: Using scrap wood that is all the same type (all pine, all yellow pine, all oak, etc…) will make it easier to assemble the trailer. Different types of wood expand and contract at different rates and can cause gaps or other problems when assembling your boat trailer.
The plywood should be a “structural” type (ex. “B” grade) that is at least as thick as 1/8″. This will give your trailer a strong, durable surface to put your boat on and to stand on when loading and unloading it. You can also use wood strips (1×2’s, 2×3’s, etc…) in place of the plywood.
Tip: Instead of using a full sheet of plywood, you may be able to find (or even have) some scraps that will work just as well. I had a strip of plywood that was 1′ wide and 10′ long so I used it for the bottom of my boat trailer.
The next thing I did was to cut the 2×4’s and the plywood to size. Tip: Since I wanted my boat trailer to be on the small side (to fit in my garage), I made most of the pieces too short. I just added a piece of 1×2 behind the 2×4 to make up the difference (for example, a 3′ long piece became a 3′ 6″ long piece).
The 2×4’s were attached using deck screws. The 2×4’s don’t need to be perfectly square and they don’t have to be at exact intervals either. Just eyeball it so it’s fairly square and the 2×4’s aren’t too far off of 3″.
The plywood was attached using a different method. Since the plywood is structural and carries most of the weight, it needs to be very secure. I used 3″ screws to attach the plywood.
Make sure you pre-drill your holes so the wood doesn’t split. Space your screws 6″ apart in opposing angles (Diagram 1). This will strengthen your trailer frame and give it more rigidity.
Tip: If you have an old bed frame laying around (or can get one for free or cheap), use it to secure the plywood to, instead of using plywood directly.
