It’s best to keep your DNA samples refrigerated or frozen until you are ready to ship them off to a testing lab. The reason for this is to ensure the integrity of the DNA. If the DNA gets too warm, it will begin to break down which could give you inaccurate results. However, once you are ready to have your samples tested, you can simply take them out of the freezer so that you can ship them off to the testing lab without having to wait for them to fully thaw. From there, the lab will thaw the samples themselves.
Do I need special training to perform these tests?
No, you don’t need any special training to perform these tests. Of course, if you don’t have any knowledge of science, then you probably won’t understand a thing that you read in the instructions. That’s okay though since you can easily look up any scientific terms online and then come back to the instructions once you feel comfortable with the material.
Why would I need to learn how to extract DNA from a sample when there are already premade DNA kits available?
The main reason for this is if you want to do the DNA test on something other than a cotton swab. If you wanted to do, say, a blood test, then you’re going to need to extract the DNA yourself since there aren’t any premade DNA kits for that particular sample. Extracting DNA is also important if you want to gather genetic information from bones or even petrified wood.
