The bucket needs to be emptied when it’s full and you have to make sure that the area where the bucket is located can handle the extra moisture or you may end up with some water leaking on the floor.
The most common type of mechanical dehumidifier is the pedestal model. It comes in an upright rectangular shape and has a bucket that sits right underneath it.
The second type is a desiccant dehumidifier. This type of unit works a little differently than the traditional model and doesn’t use a pump to get the moisture out of the air. It comes in a cylindrical shape and has a built in desiccant material that absorbs moisture from the air.

How to Properly Maintain Your Dehumidifier
The first thing you need to do is clean all of the visible dust and dirt off of the unit. Use a soft cloth or a dusting brush for this.
Don’t use any kind of harsh chemicals to clean it because it may damage the exterior and end up causing more problems in the long run.
After you’ve removed all of the dust, you need to wash the coils. The coils are the parts of the dehumidifier that absorb moisture from the air.
You can wash them with warm soapy water or a commercial coil cleaning solution. Don’t forget to remove the drain hose from the collection container before you do this. After you’ve rinsed off all of the soap, spin out as much water as you can and hang dry it completely before using it again. If you don’t remove the water from the coils, they will rust. If you don’t dry them completely before using the dehumidifier again, it will not be able to remove moisture from the air properly.
You also need to check the collection container everyday and empty it as needed. Be sure to keep track of how full it gets so that you can empty it before it’s completely full.
