Collagen is one of the most important building blocks of our bodies. Without it, we would not have any bones or muscles. There are many types of collagen and they all work together to make up our body’s structure. Some types are used for structural purposes while others play vital roles in tissue repair and regeneration.
The term “collagen” refers to a group of proteins found in connective tissues such as tendons, ligaments, blood vessels and skin. These proteins are involved in various functions including cell growth, bone formation and wound healing. They also serve as building blocks for other proteins that form muscle fibers and cartilage. Collagen is made from two amino acids called glycine (Gly) and proline (Pro). Glycine and Pro are found naturally in animal products like meat, milk, eggs and fish.

There are different kinds of collagen. Types 1 & 2 are considered the most important ones because they provide strength to bones and teeth.
Collagen 1 – Makes up bone, skin, muscles, tendons and most internal organs.

As we grow older, our bodies naturally produce less and less collagen. This process accelerates after the age of 35. As a result, we often experience wear and tear on various parts of our bodies leading to reduced flexibility, joint pain and muscle fatigue.
As we get older, our skin starts to show signs of aging. Sunlight, heredity, smoking, stress and diet affect the quality and texture of our skin. Collagen is the “glue” that holds skin cells together. As we age, collagen begins to break down causing fine lines and wrinkles. In more serious cases, collagen depletion can cause drooping cheeks or jawline, loss of elasticity around the mouth and under the eyes (crows feet), Sparse hair, damaged nails, etc.
Treatments: There are various ways to treat/prevent aging skin caused by collagen depletion. Some use dermal fillers, others get botox injections and some get teeth implants. There are also various topical creams and lotions that claim to reduce wrinkles.
Drugstore Cremes: Specifically designed to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and give your skin a more youthful appearance, many of these products contain a “blend” of ingredients that do not include actual collagen. While some creams can provide temporary relief from dry skin and minor wrinkles, they cannot undo serious damage caused by sun exposure, smoking and diet.
Collagen Cremes: These creams contain actual collagen, the protein that provides strength and elasticity to your skin. By reversing the effects of collagen depletion, creams containing this ingredient can give your skin the spring back effect you once enjoyed in your youth. However, not all collagen creams are made equal. They can be expensive and some are downright scams.
Benefits of Collagen: Most creams that claim to “reduce the appearance of wrinkles and give your skin a more youthful appearance” contain little or no actual collagen. They instead rely on fillers and herbal ingredients that simply make the cream smell good or feel nice on your skin.
Aging Bones and Joints
As we get older, bones and joints also start to show signs of wear and tear. This is especially true for athletes and individuals who are prone to sports related injuries. Worn out joints often lead to a reduced range of motion and loss of strength.
Treatments: Certain diets, rest, ice, etc can help alleviate some of the pain caused by bone and joint problems. Doctors will sometimes prescribe medicine or perform surgery in more serious cases (knee replacements, hip replacements, etc). As an alternative, you can take supplements like glucosamine that claim to build new bone and repair joints.
Drugstore Cremes: There are a number of creams and lotions on the market that claim to alleviate joint and bone problems caused by aging. While most of these creams do contain pain relief agents like menthol or camphor, they do not actually regenerate or build new bone.
Glucosamine Cremes: Glucosamine is an amino sugar that is a building block of cartilage. Many doctors believe that glucosamine can relieve joint pain caused by cartilage deterioration. By taking supplements containing glucosamine, some people have claimed to experience relief from joint pain caused by arthritis.
In many cases, diet plays a major role in how our bodies age. People who eat fast food on a regular basis and people who don’t get enough exercise in general will obviously experience aches and pains at a younger age.
