Best Carpal Tunnel Brace for Sleep: What are they?
A carpal tunnel brace is a device used to reduce or prevent the movement of your fingers and/or wrists while sleeping. There are two types of carpal tunnel braces available:
1) Mechanical carpals – these devices use springs, elastic bands, or other mechanical means to hold your hands in place.
They’re designed primarily for those with arthritis (a condition where the joints do not move normally).
2) Therapeutic carpal tunnels – these devices use heat, cold, or pressure to keep your hand in place.
These are typically used for those with tendinitis (inflammation of one or both sides of the joint), which causes pain when you move your hands.
Mechanical Carpals: Mechanical carpal tunnels are generally considered safer than therapeutic ones because they don’t require any surgery and don’t cause infections like some therapies may do. However, there have been cases of them breaking down over time. If you’ve had one break down, you’ll need to replace it every few years.
Therapeutic Carpal Tunnels: Therapeutic carpal tunnels are less common than mechanical ones, but they’re still quite popular among orthopedic surgeons due to their effectiveness and ease of use. Most therapists will recommend a type based on what kind of patient they see most often. For example, a rheumatologist (a physician that deals with patients with arthritis and other similar conditions) will generally recommend one with heat therapy because it’ll help relax the wrist and hand muscles. An orthopedist (a physician that deals with problems in the bones, joints, ligaments, and tendons) may prescribe one of these braces if you have an injury to the extensor or flexor muscles of the wrist.
How to wear it?
Carpal tunnel brace, despite the name, is actually a type of wrist splint that you wear on your hand. The main goal of the device is to hold your wrist in a fixed position, so it’s most effective when it’s worn during sleep. However, some can also be worn during the day if you’re undergoing physical therapy. Also, they typically only cover the palm and fingers, so you can still move your thumb.
Things to Remember: Carpal tunnel brace is quite easy to use, but there are a few precautions you should follow:
1) Try to keep it dry and clean by gently washing it with soap and warm water.
2) Only wear it at night or while undergoing physical therapy – never during the day.
3) Try not to sleep on it.
If you find yourself rolling around a lot in your sleep, try putting it on a pillow.
4) Never engage in any activities that may cause trauma to the area while wearing the device.
This means no typing, driving, playing sports, or anything else that could potentially harm your wrist.
5) Don’t share this with other people because there’s a risk of skin breakdown or infection.
6) If you see any signs of skin irritation or infection (redness, swelling, pus, etc.
), discontinue use and call your physician.
7) If you feel any tingling or numbness when wearing it, discontinue use and call your physician.
