Best Car Antifreeze: What Is It?
Antifreeze is a liquid that prevents metal parts from rusting or corroding. It’s used in many different applications, but it’s most commonly found in automobile engine cooling systems. You may have heard of antifreeze being used in your vehicle’s cooling system before, but you were not aware of its use in the radiator cooling system.
What Is Antifreeze Used For?
Antifreeze is used in the cooling system of automobiles because it helps prevent corrosion. When metals such as iron, steel, copper, zinc and magnesium come into contact with each other they tend to form compounds called oxides. These oxides are very reactive and when they react together they create dangerous substances known as hydrocarbons (HCs). These HCs are extremely flammable and if they get too close to one another they will explode. If you’ve ever seen a firework go off, then you understand how dangerous these chemicals can be.
The problem with using antifreeze in the radiator cooling system is that it tends to clog up the lines and cause problems for the rest of your cooling system. In order to prevent this problem, the use of silicate Esters is recommended when using certain types of antifreeze. Silicate Esters are not damaged by the use of silicone in the antifreeze and they do not clog up your system.
What Is Silicate Esters?
Silicate Esters are a type of chemical that is used in antifreeze. It is actually a class of chemicals that are composed of silicates and esters. Silicate Esters help to prevent the formation of the compounds that cause metal oxides to form and they also prevent the formation of the HCs in these compounds. The most well-known Silicate Ester is T-Butyl Methylsilanoate. This chemical prevents the clogging up of your vehicle’s cooling system.
What Is T-Butyl Methylsilanoate?
T-Butyl Methylsilanoate is the most common Silicate Ester that is used in antifreeze. It is a clear, odorless liquid that has a specific smell that is most closely related to garlic and parsley. It has a low toxicity and is not very flammable. It helps prevent the problems that are caused by freezing temperatures and it prevents different metals from rusting into one another.
