How To Choose The Perfect Headphones
There are lots of different types of headphones out there so it can get a bit overwhelming when you go to buy a pair. In this guide, I’ll go over the different types of headphones and what they’re used for so you’ll know exactly what to look for when shopping for a new pair.
SECTION C: Types of Headphones
There are several different types of headphones and each is designed for specific purposes or to be used in specific situations. Depending on what you need, you’ll want to choose the right type of headphone to meet those needs. I’m going to go over all the different types of headphones so you’ll know what to look for when buying a new pair.
Earbuds or earphones are probably the most common type of headphone. These are the little earplugs that come with most iPods and other music playing devices. These are very small, lightweight, and portable so you can easily carry them with your on the go. They also have nice flat cords that don’t get tangled up.
Because they are small and lightweight they don’t offer the best sound quality or noise isolation but they are perfect when you just want to listen to music on the go.
Pro: Very small and lightweight, offer decent sound quality for their size
Con: Offer no noise isolation, can be uncomfortable after a long period of use
Earpad headphones like the ones that come with the iPhone pack some decent sound quality into a small frame and work quite well for their size. These types of headphones are also great for watching movies on your iPod or listening to music while on the go. Their small size makes them very easy to transport and they provide decent enough sound quality that you won’t be disappointed.
Ear pad headphones do not offer noise isolation so you can still hear outside noises like the bus driver telling you your stop. They can also be a bit uncomfortable after a long period of use since they press against the inside of your ears.
Pro: Very small and lightweight, offer decent sound quality for their size
Con: Offer no noise isolation, can be uncomfortable after a long period of use
In-ear headphones, also known as earbuds, are a more improved version of the earpod headphone. They have better sound quality and can block out more outside noise than earpods. In-ear headphones are great for portable music players because of their small size and they also come with various sized rubber tips so you can choose the size that fits best in your ear.
These types of headphones are great for on the go use but they can be a bit hard on the ears since they tend to rub against the inside of your ears which can get uncomfortable after a while.
Pro: Great sound quality and noise isolation for their size, very portable
Con: Can be uncomfortable after a long period of use
Clip-on headphones are headphones that have a small plastic or metal bar that you clip over your shirt. They sometimes come with foam pads that go on the bar itself, however these are not always necessary. These types of headphones are great for listening to music on the go since they are very lightweight and portable and can easily clip over your shirt. They also provide decent enough noise isolation that you can listen to music at lower volumes since it blocks out some outside noise.
Clip-on headphones do not have the best sound quality, however they are great for people who want their music loud enough to block out outside noises like traffic noise or your neighbor’s loud stereo.
Pro: Very small and lightweight, offer decent noise isolation
Con: Do not have the best sound quality
Full Size Headphones
Full sized headphones are headphones that completely cover or enclose your ears to provide better sound quality. These types of headphones provide the best sound quality but they do not work as well when you want to listen to music on the go since they are quite large and can be a hassle to carry around. They also require more power than earbuds or clip-on headphones so they often need their own batteries or an amplifier to power them.
They can also come with their own set of drawbacks such as being heavy and uncomfortable after a long period of use.
Pro: Offer the best sound quality
Con: Can be large and heavy, offer no noise isolation, require extra power
In-Ear Monitor (IEMs)
In-ear monitors are earbuds that are custom fitted to your ears to provide superior sound quality. Because they are custom fitted they provide a perfect seal within your ear and block out a lot of outside noise. Depending on the quality of the IEMs you buy they can last from as short of a period of time like a few months to a few years.
IEMs are similar to earbuds but with a few differences.
Pro: Offer great sound quality and noise isolation
Con: Custom fittings can be expensive, temporary
Wireless headphones are headphones without wires. They have a receiver that connects to your music source and then sends the sound to the headphones via radio waves. This allows you to listen to your music from anywhere in the range that the receiver reaches. There are two types of wireless headphones, analog and digital.
Most of the wireless headphones available on the market today are the digital RF (radio frequency) type. Unlike analog, digital RF does not suffer from signal loss. This means that the sound quality is less likely to get distorted and you will be able to listen to your music at a further distance away from the receiver.
Just like other types of headphones, there are pros and cons to wireless headphones as well.
Pro: Can listen to music from anywhere in range of receiver
Con: Higher chance of losing signal, can be costly if not bought at a discount
I hope that this guide has helped you on your journey to find the right headphones for you. If you still aren’t sure, take a trip to your local guitar shop and test out a few pairs to find the ones that sound the best to you.
There are many factors that play into the quality of sound you get out of your headphones. Consider the environment in which you are listening to the headphones, the media you are listening to and the quality of the headphones themselves.
I listen to music on my headphones at a very low volume, sometimes even at a level so low that I can barely hear anything at all.
Why would I do this?
Because I like to take advantage of what I call ‘sound realism’. If I can’t hear the music at a low level then the sound just becomes noise and I become less appreciative of the music itself.
I have a few favorite albums that I really enjoy listening to with excellent sound quality, take for example the song ‘Pull Harder On The Rope’ by ‘The Gaslight Anthem’.
You can hear the sound of the string vibrating after plucking a note on the guitar, you can hear the reverb from the drum set around the 3:00 mark and best of all, you can hear every breath and utterance made by the vocalist.
Now take this song and listen to it on a $200 headphone set and then listen to it on your $5 earbuds that came with your phone.
There is a big difference in the quality of sound, no?
Nowadays most people are listening to music on their phones or some other type of media device. There is a big difference in the quality of sound you get from a decent set of headphones and a low quality set that you’d find with a $30 phone.
I don’t judge people based off of what they are listening to on their media devices, but I will say this: take advantage of the quality that is out there and listen to every little part of your favorite songs.
There are a few things that I look for when buying new headphones.
1. Sound quality – is the sound crisp and full without any static or buzzing?
2. Ease of use –
Can I easily control the volume or media device without hassle?
3. Style –
Do these go with the style of music that I listen to?
4. Durability –
Can I throw these around and still have them work afterward?
I hope that these four factors will help you in your quest to find the right pair of headphones for you.
The market is currently filled with many types of headphones, here are a few that I have experience with.
These are designed to fit inside your ear and are held in place by the outer ear to isolate the sound. They typically come with any media device and are very inexpensive. The sound quality is low, but they do provide decent sound isolation.
These headphones enclose the outer ear and are held in place on the side of the head. They provide moderate sound isolation and are less expensive than other types of headphones.
Full Size (Over-Ear):
These are the type of headphones that envelop the entire ear. They provide the best sound quality and the most noise isolation, but they can be very expensive.
Full Size (Around-Ear):
These are similar to Full-Size (Over-Ear) headphones, but the portion that encloses the ear is placed over the ear instead of around the ear.
These are inserted into the listener’s ear, but not quite as far as earbuds do. They typically come with a clip so that they can be worn on the ear or collar. They provide good sound quality with some noise isolation.
No matter what type of headphones you get, make sure that you test them out in the store before you buy them. Listen to some of your favorite songs and see if you can hear the instruments and vocals clearly. If you can’t then the headphones might not be the best choice for you.
You also want to consider the style and design of the headphones.
Is the brand name well known and reputable?
Do these headphones complement your fashion style?
Are they durable or are they going to break easily?
What kind of warranty comes with them?
Use these questions as guidelines when you go to the store and try out different pairs.
Most importantly, trust your instinct! If you think a certain type of headphones look cool, then get them. You are the one who has to wear them after all.
Choose your favorite color and style!
