Criteria For Evaluation
The frames of these bikes are where their names come from. Generally speaking, they can be divided into two categories: road and off-road. Road bikes feature thinner and lighter frames so that the rider can travel faster. They usually have just a single gear system to prevent the pedals from engaging with the wheel, causing friction and slowing it down.
They also tend to be much more narrow than other types.
Off-road bikes have much thicker frames to allow for shocks and jolts to be absorbed over rough terrain. The wheels can have varying types of spokes but they are always thicker and stronger than those found on road bikes.
In between these two types are the hybrid bikes. These models try to incorporate aspects from both categories to create a model that can handle both types of terrain but still provide the rider with a comfortable ride.
This is the number of revolutions per minute (RPM) that the crank and pedal make as you move your legs. Most bike pedals have one of these markers on them so that you can tell how many times it’s spinning. For example, once every revolution would be considered one cadence. This is an important number to know because the industry has adopted the use of two specific measurements: RPM and Gearing.
These are labeled as RPM and GT for short.
RPM measures the actual revolutions of the pedal crank and has become an industry standard for measuring cadence. Most bikes have one of these markers on the crank so you can tell how many times it spin in one minute. This is generally between 50-100RPM.
Gearing refers to how many times the wheel turns for every revolution of the crank. This can be calculated by dividing the number of teeth on the front and back clusters by each other. For example, a bike with 24 teeth in the front and 36 in the back would have a gearing of 2:1.
The general rule of thumb is that you should be able to pedal at least one time per every two revolutions of the crank. When this number drops below one, then you are technically into what is known as overdrive. There isn’t much need to go into this since it’s fairly uncommon for people to ride in this high of a gear, but it is important to know what it means.
Gearing is important to know because it affects the performance of the bike. A higher gearing means that it will be easier to pedal the bike at a slower cadence due to less resistance from the crank. A lower gearing means that it will be harder to pedal at a slower cadence, but the bike will be able to travel faster. This can come in handy when trying to climb steep hills for example.
Most bicycles feature frames made of one of three materials: steel, aluminum, and carbon fiber. Each of these materials have their own set of advantages and disadvantages that we will explore in this section.
Steel: Steel is the heaviest material used to make bicycles but it is also the most durable. Some people even take these models on airplanes! Most of them can be folded down quickly and easily without the use of tools. They typically weigh about as much as a regular road bike would and are just as durable.
Make sure to research the different models since some have suspensions while others do not. This would be considered the best type of model for people who like to ride but need to take the bus sometimes.
Road: As the name suggests, these are made primarily for riding on roads. They tend to have thin tires that are narrow (thus the term “clincher” that you may have heard) rather than the fat tires that are used for off-roading or mountain climbing. They are also much lighter than other types of bikes. With these benefits, however, they aren’t as durable or as suitable for rugged terrain since the thin tires will easily be damaged if used for anything else.
