Alienware laptops are well known for their high performance and excellent features. These machines have been designed with gamers in mind. They come in various configurations, ranging from the entry level model to the top end models. Some of these computers even feature Nvidia graphics cards, which makes them ideal for those looking to play games at higher resolutions or with greater graphical fidelity than what’s available on your desktop computer.
The Alienware 15 R2 is one such machine, which comes equipped with Intel’s latest Core i7 processor and 16GB of RAM. It costs $1,099 (around £750) and it’s currently the most expensive Alienware laptop on sale today. That price tag includes a free copy of Forza Horizon 3.
If you’re considering buying this machine, then you’ll want to read our full review first. Otherwise, here’s everything you need to know about the Alienware 15 R2.
The Alienware 15 R2 is a high-end laptop that will set you back $1,099 (about £760, AU$1,415), which may sound expensive until you consider all of the premium hardware packed inside.
It’s powered by Intel’s brand new Skylake Core i7-6820HK processor, which is supported by 16GB of RAM and a 512GB PCIe SSD. Graphics-wise, the Alienware 15 R2 features an Nvidia GeForce GTX 980M with 8GB of dedicated GDDR5 VRAM.
According to Notebookcheck’s benchmarks, the GTX 980M is roughly 40% faster than the GTX 970M and almost twice as fast as the GTX 965M. It should offer a decent amount of performance even for hardcore gamers.
The 15.6-inch display has a resolution of 1920 x 1080, which is fairly standard for gaming laptops in this price range. It can play games at a solid 60 frames per second even at the maximum settings.
You’ll need to connect a mouse and keyboard (or maybe a controller) since the Alienware 15 R2 only has two USB ports, a HDMI port, an Ethernet jack and a headphone/microphone combo jack.
The design of the Alienware 15 R2 is fairly typical when it comes to gaming laptops. It has a dark gray plastic shell with sharp corners and red accents sprinkled throughout. The lid features the signature green Alienware logo, which glows like the Eye of Sauron when the system is powered on.
The interior features a similar design with a few dynamic lights. The keyboard itself is defined by its unique font and colored lighting. It also includes a number of programmable buttons, which allow you to save significant time when launching your favorite games.
While aesthetics are certainly important, it’s what on the inside that really matters and in this case the Alienware 15 R2 has a lot going for it.
There are very few components that justify the price tag, but the quality of those parts really makes a difference. The Nvidia GTX 980M is no slouch when it comes to gaming performance. It can play most games on the market at 1080p and 60fps.
While the display isn’t anything to write home about, it’s important to remember that you can connect it to an HDMI port through your home TV. In other words, you can play your games on a larger display while sitting on the couch.
